What is Glass Etching with Vinyl?

If you are intrigued and curious about how you would be able to define an exquisite and highly sophisticated do-it-yourself masterpiece…Then you must know what glass etching is!

Glass Etching, also known as French embossing is an amazingly, super easy, and highly satisfying technique in designing numerous small pieces of crafts made out of glass found in our home. This involves the usage of chemical acids in the form of cream containing hydrofluoric acid. This acid scratches and creates a rough surface on a glass-made substrate. This can easily imitate the look or genuine effect of frosted glass, making a curated design permanently achieve luxurious vibes.

Why etch glass instead of adding or heat pressing a vinyl?

Have you asked yourself the same question before? “Why didn’t I know this earlier?” Don’t you worry; I also experience the same. But, this time both of us will never let this chance slip away! To make us more inspired to craft with it, better to fill our cups with lots of reasons why we must etch our glass-made surfaces!

1. To hand wash? Or wash glassware with a dishwasher? You don’t have to hesitate or think many times! Etching a glass with vinyl gives you the top advantage of making your entire glassware dishwasher S-A-F-E. It is free from all peeling moments you usually experience in sticking vinyl as a decorative material.

2. Achieve a hundred percent artistic satisfaction with a design that never leaves till the last broken pieces of your glass! Etched Glass with vinyl keeps the stay of your design with everlasting permanence and aesthetic trueness of frosted glass appearance.

3. Never get disappointed in getting quick and best results! Etch glass cream’s fast-acting reaction to glass surfaces will let you accomplish as many DIYs as you want in less than an hour!

4. Etched glass with vinyl is a DIY- worthy for customizing gifts for everybody! It is another excellent method to stamp creativity to any glassware. Etch will  create a unique look to any glass projects intended for displays. You can match it with a beautiful LED light effect!

5. Having classy and elegant glassware or glass displays should never be expensive and never stamp a hole in your pockets! Etching glass with vinyl isn’t just an adorable method to decorate a customized glass project. Still, it is a very economical way to obtain glassware or glass-made displays that are expensively looking but comes with an inexpensive cost!

6. Glass Etching with Vinyl can serve great potential for showcasing your designs! It can give a crafter more freedom to make designs that don’t need to be physically interconnected like the usual design we do when making HTV and decals. With its wide range of applications creates products for your venture that are infinitely customizable.

How does Glass Etching with Vinyl work?

How does this happen? Well, well, well… Don’t worry, I’ll explain it to you clearly because I don’t want you to get your head aching! And not only that, you’ll be lucky enough for I’m so generous in giving you all-out the details! It’s like magic how glass etching works with any glass-made surface!

In this design application technique, Glass Etching Cream is our main star, while its best support is the stencil or design pattern in a vinyl. With the glass etching cream’s significant role in doing this process, it tends to be a highly reactive chemical agent that can dissolve molecular components within the surface of a glass. By combining its crafty powers when applied over a stencil, the contact of it to the vinyl’s open cut areas (or parts not covered by the cut out of the stencil) will give a directive on what is to be etched on the glass. With that, the glass etch cream can remove minute particles on the specific surface of the glass. Therefore, it will generate a beautiful frosted pattern design.

And that’s it! Unbelievably, in just a whip of etching cream and a little rinsing, WOLA! Your glass project’s plain and bare surface has finally received a marvelous transformation!

Is Etching a Glass with Vinyl permanent?

Since we started customizing various pieces to any substrate using any craft materials and design application techniques, it’s always been a sizzling topic if our design could stay on our chosen surface with longevity. This time, similar to designs created through etching with vinyl, the talk of the town also asks the same. Could glass etching with vinyl make a design stay permanently? Is it a yes or no? To answer this, it’s a big YES!

First, if someone decides to use glass etching with vinyl in their craft, design permanence is why they choose this method. All designs on any glass surface and gone through etching can give the crafter a PERMANENT RESULT and no more after-application orations to do. Once you wash and clean up your finished item with etching, nothing should one worry about or think of.

As a good note to pay attention to, since the design result of the etching given to us is permanent, that only means we cannot afford to commit mistakes in our application process. We can add designs to our surface, but we cannot make any mistakes, for it cannot be undone. If in case you did one, the possible remedy to solve the problem is by adding little filler designs in that area of error. However, a bigger error will only mean discarding your glass and repeating everything from the top. Moreover, you must be sure of your actions and design placements if you’ll be doing glass etching for your project.

Can we use Regular Vinyl for Glass Etching?

You would agree with me on this one. Suppose glass etching is an easy and enjoyable way to personalize all glassware. In that case, we are all sure that the process of doing this has never been so complicated, and likewise, the materials it needs would never be difficult to find.

If you see gorgeous-looking designs appear on any smooth surface like glass, there is one material we could think of that can surely do this. Yes, they are vinyl or regular vinyl, where we usually run every time we make crafts that we want. They are so versatile with a lot of specific varieties and one that can precisely give the best performance to a DIY technique like glass etching. Its capability to be used in any permanent or temporary application produces impressive results. It also provides excellent cling to a surface, and its ability to resist chemicals, whether glass etching cream or paint, can still give a crafter a good pattern of design.

What vinyl should be used for Glass Etching?

Like the usual question and debates of many crafters, will there be the best vinyl to use for our design pattern, especially for the glass etching project? Throughout our crafting and DIY-ing, we cannot hide the instance that there’s a material that can always satisfy the success we’re looking for in our project. However, in reality, it’s always a matter of personal preference and which material shall work best for our crafting. Similarly to stencils in vinyl that we use for glass etching projects, this isn’t exempted from this kind of requirement.

With that, we gathered some information on what vinyl you could root for a stunning look to obtain on a glass etched surface. They might not be the 100% perfect vinyl we want, but guarantee this craft material can work beyond 101% for any design patterns you wish to have for any glass project you want to create!

1. Stencil Vinyl

Stencil Vinyl is vinyl for glass etching that is economical and very handy. Since this type of material is normally made from PVC, this can repel back from the glass etching cream and gives a good grip on the glass surface avoiding leakage from it. It is detachable and does not leave any traces of residue once the process is done and once it is needed to be peeled off. Among the materials for this process, stencil vinyl is the most ideal for creating patterns that can add details or dimension to a design and is also a material best for masking.

2. Permanent Vinyl

Permanent vinyl is another best vinyl for glass etching next to stencil vinyl. It is a good mask with a marginally adhesive strength that can protect the glass’s unexposed surface from the glass etching cream. It affixes better on the surface, avoids further errors from the possible seepage of the chemical agent, and doesn’t give residue issues when getting it off to the glass.

3. Removable Adhesive Vinyl

Removable vinyl is the well-known “renter’s best friend” of many DIY enthusiasts for its instant and very convenient functionality. It is an excellent vinyl to use in any project that requires a provisional application, which is why it is a material widely used for a stencil in any glass etching project. When it is applied on the substrate, one doesn’t have to worry about keeping this vinyl stuck or easily peeled for both can be quickly done or undone. This vinyl also won’t give you sticky excess and won’t damage the surface you’re working to.

4. Flexible Cricut Stencil Film

Flexible Cricut Stencil Film is another go-to material that a crafter can run to for any urgent glass etching projects. This stencil film is an upgraded version of craft material possessing better adhesive backing for stress-free design creation. It is characterized by excellent material strength when affixed on a surface yet easily peeled off without leaving any marks of residues.

What surface of Glass-made substrate should you avoid when Etching with vinyl?

While your crafty heart is starting to fall harder with the etching process, I know you will not just treat this as a hobby or creative past-time. However, before things get done too quickly, hold your hands first by picking up glassware or substrates! For now, we need your eyes to focus on this section, which will help you save yourself and your project against repetition and frustration.

A little head’s up; it doesn’t mean that you can glass etch on various glasses; all will work in this method. As early as now, you need to know what kind of glass surface you should avoid or you shouldn’t pick in doing this method. In this way, it will help you make a better selection, give you good options, and enables you to prepare yourself from becoming resistant to shocking reactions if in case you notice the etching cream fails to do its mission to your glass surface.

Here are the following surfaces you need to check and avoid when picking glassware or glass-made substrates for your etching process.

1. Glass-made Substrates that are Pyrex and made of Borosilicate.

If you have heard of some successful etching on Pyrex, well, this all be possible to new Pyrex items except to oven wares with the higher or highest quality of glass like one made of Borosilicate. Oven wares that are too rigid, scratch resistant, and can withstand drastic temperature adjustments, are not susceptible to receiving etching cream on their surface. In addition, if you want to experiment or if you want to try your ovenware’s compatibility with the glass etching process, test it by placing a small dot of glass etching cream on the bottom of it. Afterward, give it several minutes before washing to see if it works.

2. Glass-made Substrates possess crystalized components.

Similar to Borosilicate, glasses resembling crystal components may be challenging and unaffected by etching cream. This can give you vague and not satisfying etched results. Take note; don’t get victimized by choosing inexpensive glassware, whether it’s clear or colored appearance. Mostly, they are not genuine colored glass.

3. Coated Glass-made Substrates.

Glass that is topically colored, dipped, or treated (stained, painted, opalescent or pearlescent in the finish) will most likely not to etch. Etching cream will always work best for uncoated or one with the actual glass color.

How to do Etching with Vinyl on Glass-made Substrates?

It’s glass etching time! See those eyes glaring and burning aura that has been so ready to make its glass etch masterpiece from the very beginning of this session. Since we got to know what we need to know, I think there’s no more reason to stop you from trying and doing this method! With that, we made for you this comprehensive guide that could ladder you in nailing off breathtaking pieces!

Steps in Etching on Glass-made Substrates with Vinyl

1: Choosing and Creation of Stencil Design

  • On your computer, go to Design Space to browse, select, and upload an own-made or pre-made image or text design you like to use for Etching.
  • Insert your chosen image to the canvas so you can edit and scale the design suitable to the size of the surface of your chosen substrate.
  • Apply the weeding box to your image for easy weeding later.

2: Cutting of the Stencil Design

  • When loading a stencil vinyl or a permanent vinyl on the cutting machine, make sure it is positioned the liner side down on the cutting mat.
  • To cut, just use the recommended cut setting of your chosen material.

3: Weeding of the design

  • Do a reverse weeding to remove the material away from the part of the design you desire to appear on the vinyl.
  • Set aside the imprint for design transferring and glass etching later.

4: Readying the Glass-made Substrate for Etching

  • Before affixing the vinyl and etching glass, ensure your surface is free from any fingerprints, oil residues, dirt, or lint; this can lessen the efficiency of your vinyl and glass etching cream.
  • To clean the glass, it’s best to use isopropyl alcohol or a glass cleaner.

5: Transferring and Design Application to the Glass

  • To transfer the design, use a low-tack transfer tape.
  • Cut a piece of it similar to the size of the design. Then apply the transfer tape down the vinyl design and burnish it using a scraper to remove the bubbles.
  • Peel the vinyl’s backing; this time, the only thing left is the image attached to the transfer tape.
  • Carefully affix the transfer tape with vinyl down the surface of the glass. Make sure to meticulously burnish the design’s interior edges to remove air pockets or creases and prevent leakage of the glass etching cream beyond the boundaries of the design.
  • Use painter’s tape to protect the remaining glass parts from any spillage of the etching cream.

 6: Etching Cream Application

  • Using the Armour Glass Etching Cream, proceed to etching the glass; however, always do it with caution. Shake and stir the cream well before applying. Wear gloves and protective eyewear to avoid contact with the cream causing any irritations.
  • On the open areas of the design, apply a thick layer of the cream. Brush, path, and dab it evenly to let it sit on the surface. Do this for three to six minutes to get the best results.
  • When the time is up, rinse the glass to remove the etching cream away under cool running water.
  • Remove the vinyl and if there are still glass etching cream residues left, wash it again.
  • Finally, dry the finished product using a lint-free cloth or paper towel.

Isn’t this a lovely technique to do? It does! Loving the etched glass look with vinyl is so divine and exquisite to see in every handmade piece we could make. I hope this end of our crafting excursion gives you a full refill of happiness for customization and the gratification of delivering a fantastic finished product!
